Screaming Females and JEFF the Brotherhood Continue Their Rise, Selling Out Bowery Show

A disheveled man stumbled up the Bowery subway stairs, turned to brave the February cold and, startled, stopped in his tracks.  Looking at the unexpected mass of people lining Delancey Street, their numbers spilling onto the Bowery, he asked no one in particular, “What is all this for?” A showcase of seven bands - six from New Jersey’s independent label, Don Giovanni Records - was being held that night at the Bowery Ballroom, but that’s not the answer he got in return.

Didn’t Recognize You, “Sarita;” Your American Accent is Too Thick

Spanish is one of my least favorite school subjects, yet I could not wish more for some cultural influence to liven up “Sarita,” the latest in Fordham College at Lincoln Center’s Mainstage season. This play is supposed to take place in a Spanish community, but director Daniella Topol’s production has nary a trace of ethnicity, leaving the show a rather stale affair. 8 comments

Going Beyond The Museum Mile In The Outer Boroughs

Going to school in the heart of Manhattan can cause you to forget that there are, indeed, four other boroughs in the great city of New York. Most people have been to the Museum of Modern Art or the Museum of Natural History, but here are some museums you might not have ventured to in the other four boroughs of the city.

Blackout

Two Fordham Seniors Turn A Spotlight On Their Band Blackout

Blackout plays power-chord driven, wholesome rock. The partially Fordham-based band could be described as the less pop-infused cousin of Weezer or some other such band, with more adrenaline. Dane Cotsonas, Fordham College at Lincoln Center (FCLC) ’10, provides the vocals and plays bass, Paul Lynch, FCLC ’10, plays guitar, and Jimmy Meier, Westwood High School ’10, plays drums.

Ninth Avenue Eats: Doughnuts + Ice Cream = Holey Cream

Head Over to One of the Newest Eateries on Ninth Avenue to Try it Out

If you’re the kind of person who examines the dessert menu before deciding on an entrée, then you may want to start walking down Ninth Avenue now. And even if you lack a sweet tooth, keep reading because you may develop one. Rather than selling doughnuts or ice cream, entrepreneur Michael Friedlander has opened up shop on Ninth Avenue between 52nd and 53rd Streets to sell something sweeter—both.

In an Oscar-Themed Battle of the Exes, I’m With Bigelow

James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow Vie For Top Awards

When James Cameron says that his fantasy would be for his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow to win the Best Director Oscar for “The Hurt Locker” (which would make her the first woman to do so), while his film, “Avatar,” wins Best Picture, he might as well be admitting that he made the lesser film.

CopOut

Movies: Now and Then

Kevin Smith's "Cop Out" and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" Play Games with the Police Genre

COP OUT (2010) Kevin Smith’s buddy cop comedy stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as partners busting a drug operation while looking for Willis’s stolen baseball card, which he wants to sell to pay for his daughter’s wedding. If that sentence runs too long for anybody, then they should know that the story does not stop there.
