Popping corn on the stove sounds intimidating, but it’s actually really easy, and it takes about the same amount of time as putting that blast-o-butter bag into the microwave and pressing start. It also tastes a lot better and has no preservatives or chemicals. On top of that, it’s cheaper! It’s the perfect snack for movie night in the apartment or to fulfill those late-night study munchies.
Homemade Parmesan Popcorn Recipe
What you’ll need:
Tools:
A medium-sized pot with lid
A dishtowel
A cheese grater
Ingredients:
A few tbsp olive oil, canola oil or vegetable oil
1/3 cup popping corn*
1 tbsp butter
Grated Parmesan cheese, to taste
*Whole Foods and Morton Williams don’t carry corn kernels for popping; try the D’Agostino’s on Amsterdam Avenue.
Instructions:
1. Put only enough oil to cover the bottom of the pot. Place one piece of corn in the oil; put on the lid and turn the heat to medium. Once that corn pops, pour in the 1/3 cup. Replace lid.
2. Cover lid with dishtowel and lightly shake the pot over the heat. In a few seconds, the corn will begin to pop. Do not remove the lid until the popping dies down. Remove from heat and allow to sit a few seconds.
3. Melt butter in the microwave 60 seconds; pour over the popcorn. Grate cheese over it and serve.
