Two articles appeared in the March 12 issue of the Observer that I would like to comment on as the problems fall within my purview as the AVP for facilities at Lincoln Center. The topics were the McMahon Hall Elevators and recycling.
ELEVATORS
The elevators in McMahon Hall are scheduled to have new door operating hardware installed this year. We anticipate that many of the operational problems will be eliminated by the replacement of these components.
Fordham has contracted an independent inspection company, the BOCA Group, to periodically inspect the elevators for safety and to assure the elevator maintenance contractor, Thyssenkrupp Inc., is maintaining the elevators entirely in accordance with its contractual obligations and in compliance with all applicable building codes. We ask for your help in reporting any problems with the elevators immediately to the Security guard at the main desk.
In recent years, the history of entrapments has been about one occurrence every month. Although any elevator failure is cause for concern and inspection, this number of entrapments, given the population, frequency of use and age of the equipment, is in the normal range. We expect that the door operator replacement project will significantly improve the performance of the elevators.
TRASH/RECYCLING
In response to the report that disposal containers for paper, plastic and cans were not available, we inspected the trash rooms of each floor of the Residence Hall. We found containers for plastic and metal in each trash room, but we did confirm that some of the trash rooms did not have containers for paper waste. We ordered more containers and have installed them in the trash rooms where they were missing: on floors 3, 4, 12, 14 and 16 through 19.
